Our Christmas coffee this year is a returning favourite Sucafina Kerinci.

Earlier this year, we had the chance to purchase Kerinci as a fly crop (second harvest). So, when the opportunity arose to bring in the main harvest, we knew it would be perfect for Christmas! With its rich, boozy body, vibrant fruity flavours, and delicate floral aroma, it’s an ideal choice for the festive season.

The Koerintji Barokah Bersama Cooperative, a community of 320 dedicated coffee producers situated on the lush plateaus surrounding Mount Kerinci, Sumatra. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, this region benefits from nutrient-rich volcanic soil, creating ideal conditions for producing exceptional coffee.

Cooperative Leadership and Vision

The cooperative, established in 2017, is led by Triyono, who manages the processing, roasting, and quality control operations. Under his guidance, the cooperative has established a fully-equipped roasting facility complete with a cupping lab near the dry mill. Triyono’s leadership has been instrumental in empowering members to not only grow and process high-quality coffee but to also market it directly.

Harvest and Processing

  • Handpicked Harvests: During harvest, families work together to handpick coffee cherries, which are then delivered to one of the cooperative's nine UPH (collection) stations. Each UPH serves as a small washing station, receiving cherries from various local farmer groups.
  • Anaerobic Natural Processing: For this specialty Anaerobic Natural lot, cherries undergo density separation before being spread on raised beds for sorting. Only the ripest cherries are used, and they’re sealed in 20kg airtight bags for 7 days at carefully controlled temperatures (18-22°C). After fermentation, cherries are returned to raised beds in protective domes, where they dry for an additional 20-23 days.
  • Quality Control: An agricultural specialist provides technical guidance to ensure consistent quality standards across UPH stations.

Sustainable Practices and Community Support

Koerintji Barokah Bersama is committed to sustainable farming, fair trade, and community growth. Farmers receive fair prices, technical support, and access to resources such as shade tree seedlings. Profits from the cooperative are reinvested into quality-enhancing infrastructure or shared with producers, fostering both economic stability and environmental stewardship.
